Life Group FAQs

Welcome to Greenbelt Life Groups

What is a Life Group?

A Life Group is a group of approximately 4 to 16 people who meet regularly to share, study and to build meaningful friendships.  An average meeting lasts for about 90 minutes, and typically includes light refreshments, discussion on our most recent sermon, and a chance to catch up what’s going on in each other’s lives.

How Important Are Life Groups?

Here at Greenbelt, Life Groups are one of the key ways to help people know, live and share their faith. They provide a chance to engage in discussion about the Bible and build relationships in a way that isn’t possible during a Sunday morning worship service.  We believe that meeting together on a regular basis is time well spent.

When and Where Do They Meet?

Life Groups meet on various nights of the week in homes throughout Ottawa and Orleans. Most evening groups meet 7-9 pm. The daytime groups meeting times vary.  There’s a day and time to meet most people’s schedules.

How Long Do They Last?

Each Life Group session lasts 9 to 11 weeks. We have Fall, Winter, and Spring sessions. At the end of each session, you will have the choice of staying in the same group, trying a new group or even taking a break. Most groups stay together from September to the following May. Life Groups do not typically meet mid-June through August, but members are encouraged to stay in touch with one another over the summer months and some groups choose to have summer social gatherings.

What is the Required Commitment?

Joining a Life Group requires a 9 to 11 week commitment to attend weekly meetings. Obviously, life happens and it’s not always possible to make it, but participants are strongly encouraged to make the commitment to be there for the entire session.  This commitment is key to a strong Life Group, and for a positive experience for you.

What Will We Study?

Most of the studies are based on the previous weekend’s message. Imagine the weekend sermon as a message on Christian living, and the Life Group is a place where you get to roll up your sleeves and discuss how the weekend’s message works in real life. Each week there will be a series of Bible passages and questions in the bulletin to study and discuss during the meeting.

What Does It Cost?

The cost of Life Groups is only the investment of commitment. Some groups share the cost of snacks or babysitting, but these are discussed at the beginning of the session so there are no surprises.  There is no fee to join a Life Group.

How Do I Sign Up For A Life Group?

Before each Life Group quarter begins there are three ways to sign up for a group – online, at our weekend services prior to the beginning of each Life Group semester, or by emailing the Life Group Coordinator.  During the weekend services, the Life Group Coordinator and Group leaders are available at the sign-up booths to help you choose a group and answer any questions. There are three sign-up weekends before the beginning of our Fall Quarter in September, and two sign-up weekends before our Winter Quarter in January and our Spring Quarter in April.

It’s easiest to join a Life Group at the beginning of a new session, but if you arrive at Greenbelt in the midst of a term and are keen to join a group, we’ll help you make a connection!  Just e-mail the Life Group Coordinator for more information.
